End the apartheid. Respect Africa! – AfDB boss on Omicron travel bans
The President of the Africa Bank, Akinwumi Adesina has waded into recent travel bans related to the Omicron variant of coronavirus.
He agrees that the bans are a type of apartheid against Africans seeking among others to hurt its economy and ultimately the lives and livelihoods of Africans.
“Global vaccines’ and travel apartheid against Africa are endangering lives, hurting economies, lives, jobs and livelihoods, from a pandemic Africa did not cause. End the apartheid. Respect Africa!
“Now that omicron has been found in many non-African and developed countries, why are travels from those countries not banned? Why single out African countries? Singling out African countries is very unfair, non-scientific and discriminatory. Lift bans on African countries!” he stated in December 6 tweets.
His call comes at a time a number of African leaders are leading the charge against the imposition of travel bans. Among them are South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of Ghana.
