3 vigilante killed, others wounded in attack by gunmen
Gunmen attacked police and vigilante facilities in Abagana, in the Njikoka local government area of Anambra state, on Friday night.
An area source said there was a hail of bullets in the area around 9 p.m. and the incident lasted nearly 45 minutes.
Nnaemeka Obitube, a resident of the area, said at least three vigilantes were shot by the bandits, while several individuals, including Obitube himself and his friend Odi, who live in the area, suffered gunshot wounds.
Obitube, who said his arm, where he had been hit by a stray bullet, had been treated, also related how the incident happened.
“It was quite unbelievable. It was the Chelsea game that kept me out at the time. The boys were prepared, shot 3 vigilantes on arrival, then drove to Enugwu-Ukwu, turned around and stopped in front of the police station and vigilante office.
“They released the prisoners and set fire to the facilities.
“The corpses (of the killed vigilantes) are still lying along the road, past Union Bank to the Secretariat. RIP to the dead who paid the ultimate price.”
He also claimed to know two of the killed vigilantes: “For now, only two are known: Agu-Rice and Mr. Benjamin Ilonze. Others have badly shot faces and cannot be recognized.
State police spokesman DSP Toochukwu Ikenga said in his response that two vigilantes were killed by the bandits and not three.
He also added that police officers strongly resisted the bandits, causing them to flee. “They only threw petrol bombs on old structures in the station, partially damaging the building.
“With the help of firefighters, that went quickly. The fire was extinguished. Patrols have been intensified in the state. The gunmen fled the scene due to the police’s superior fire,” Ikenga noted.
