The Southern Summit of Former Legislators has formally adopted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in office, citing his reform-driven leadership and economic achievements.

The endorsement came through a communiqué issued at the end of the Southern Summit of former legislators, held on Saturday at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

In their resolution, the former lawmakers commended President Tinubu’s policy reforms over the last two years, which they said have re-engineered the economy, stabilized the naira, and placed Nigeria on the path of socio-economic recovery. They urged state governments to align with these reforms to support the President’s vision of “a new Nigeria.”

Addressing the gathering, the Chief of Staff to the President and convener of the summit, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, described Tinubu’s administration as a turning point in Nigeria’s democratic and economic history. He highlighted the signing of tax reforms into law as a milestone that has ushered in an era of fairness, accountability, and national purpose.

Quoting the World Bank Development Update, Gbajabiamila revealed that Nigeria’s economy expanded by 4.6 percent in the last quarter of 2024, pushing annual growth to 3.4 percent—the fastest in a decade. He added that the fiscal deficit narrowed from 5.4 percent of GDP in 2023 to 3 percent in 2024, with federation revenues surging from N16.8 trillion in 2023 to N31.9 trillion in 2024.

He stressed that unity in diversity remains vital to nation-building:

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ensured purposeful leadership through the establishment of development commissions across the six geo-political zones. These commissions will channel more federal resources into infrastructure and human capital development nationwide. Nation building is not the work of government alone, but a joint task for all citizens at home and abroad.”

In his welcome address, Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, reminded participants that nation-building transcends political, religious, and ethnic divides.

“Unity does not mean uniformity,” he said, “but a celebration of diversity within the framework of justice, equity, and respect.” He lauded the contributions of former legislators as custodians of democracy, noting their role in grassroots representation and oversight.

Chairman of the occasion, Senator Ken Nnamani, emphasized the importance of collective dialogue among former legislators to chart solutions for Nigeria’s challenges.

Former House of Representatives Speakers, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara and Patricia Etteh, also delivered goodwill messages. Dogara warned Nigerians against “pretenders in the political space” seeking to derail progress for selfish motives, insisting that economic recovery was already evident. Etteh, on her part, called for dialogue, cohesion, and shared purpose as ingredients for peace and democratic advancement.

Hon. Raphael Igbokwe, National Coordinator of the Summit, assured participants that the gathering would continue to serve as a platform for collaborative solutions, urging sub-national governments to complement federal efforts in driving inclusive development.
