A woman, Zainab Alhassan, has been granted a divorce by a Shari’a court in Dala, Kano State, after citing her husband’s refusal to repair or replace her damaged mobile phone as grounds for ending the marriage.

Appearing before the court on Tuesday, Zainab said she no longer wished to remain in the marriage and sought to terminate it through Khul’i—a process under Islamic law where a woman can request divorce by returning her dowry.

She told the court that an argument erupted while she was watching a movie on her phone, during which her husband, Tijjani Muhammad, allegedly grabbed the device and smashed it. Zainab said she demanded he replace the phone, which was worth ₦70,000, but he declined. However, she admitted that there were no witnesses to the incident.

Despite denying the accusation, Tijjani stated he had no objection to the divorce.

Judge Mu’awiyya Shehu approved the separation under Khul’i after Zainab agreed to return the ₦30,000 dowry she received during the marriage. The court, however, dismissed her request for compensation for the damaged phone due to insufficient evidence.

The case has drawn attention on social media and in local communities, sparking discussion about material disputes in marriages and the growing use of Khul’i by women seeking personal autonomy.
