Abiodun Urges Fairness in Selection of New Awujale, Assures Support for Kingmakers

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has charged the Awujale Chiefs-in-Council to ensure fairness, transparency, and strict adherence to tradition in the process of appointing a new Awujale of Ijebuland.
The paramount stool became vacant following the passing of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona on July 13, 2025, at the age of 91, after an illustrious reign spanning over 65 years.
Speaking after a closed-door meeting with members of the Awujale Chiefs-in-Council in Iperu, Governor Abiodun emphasized the urgency of filling the revered throne, noting that “nature abhors a vacuum.”
“The process of installing another Awujale has started. The pathway to having in place a regency is the pathway to ensuring that all the i’s are dotted and t’s crossed, and to ensure that all the processes enshrined in the laws of Ijebuland are strictly followed,” he said.
The governor expressed confidence in the Council, stressing that his administration would support whichever candidate the kingmakers present at the conclusion of the nomination process.

“I must say that all of us agreed that we are on the same page, and I think this will put paid to all the rumours that have been agog. The Council is intact, with no disharmony among them. They are all working hand in glove with each other, and I am happy with today’s meeting,” Abiodun added.
While commending the Chiefs for their dedication and role in maintaining peace during the reign of the late monarch, the governor expressed optimism that the succession process would be rancour-free, giving all contenders equal opportunity.
Also speaking, the Olootu Olowa and Deputy Chairman of the Council, Chief Oluwaranti Lekan Osifeso, reaffirmed the commitment of the Chiefs to unity, peace, and the continued progress of Ijebuland.
